About This Project
History
The Merlin 1C engine is a liquid-fueled rocket engine developed by SpaceX corp. It features a regeneratively
cooled nozzle and combustion chamber, uses liquid oxygen and RP-1 as rocket propellants in a gas-generator
power cycle. Propellants are fed via a single shaft, dual impeller turbopump. The turbopump also provides
high-pressure fluid for the hydraulic actuators. It was tested successfully with a full mission duty on November 2007.
A variant of the Merlin 1C saw it’s maiden flight in August 2008 powering the third Falcon 1 that was
unsuccessful. In September 2008 powered Falcon 1 on it’s fourth flight and became the first privately-developed
liquid-fueled rocket to successfully reach orbit. Nine Merlin 1C rocket engines power the first stage in Falcon 9
that saw its maiden flight in June 2010.
